What is a sponge filter?
Sponge filters are a simple and cost-effective means of filtering aquarium water. They provide mechanical filtration, and can lead to a better population of beneficial bacteria in your aquarium and therefore a more balanced aquatic ecosystem

Answer is YES. Sponge filters are one of the most popular filters used in fish stores mean aquariums, fish rooms, and breeding tanks because they’re so reliable and easy to use.

As the air bubbles rise it sucks water into the sponge. The sponge then catches and traps particles floating around in your water, essentially filtering your water.

As with the prefilter sponge, there is no need to constantly replace them and throw away all that beneficial bacteria; just rinse the filter media in old aquarium water once a month. Coarse sponge pads remove debris from the water and can be reused by rinsing them on a monthly basis.

How long does it take to cycle a tank with a sponge filter? It takes approximately 5-6 weeks to colonize enough bacteria in a sponge filter to completely eliminate ammonia and nitrite from an aquarium.

Remove the filter sponge and rinse them in old aquarium water or dechlorinated water to remove any accumulated waste.

Sponge filters add oxygen to an aquarium by increasing the gas exchange that occurs at the water surface. This happens because the popping bubbles increase the total surface area between the water and atmosphere.
